Part 2: Guest Post by Hannah, age 12

This post is a guest post from my oldest child, Hannah.  This glitch in the beach trip was all about her and I wanted to get her first hand account of the day.  So, here it is.

On Wednesday the 13th, in Gulf Shores Alabama my grandmother Mimi made brownies for breakfast, because it was my brother Andrew’s birthday. After a delicious breakfast, we all got into our bathing suits and went out to the beach. I, personally, loved the beach house, because it was a good size, and it was literally 20 steps from the beach. The view was beautiful, with the waves, sand, and palm trees just out the window.

We went down and set up our beach chairs and towels. When my Dad and Uncle Kent were finished putting on their sunscreen, Isaac, Genevieve, Andrew and I asked them to take us out to the ocean. They had not wanted us out in the days before, because hurricane Irma had made the waves crazy big. The waves had calmed down by Wednesday, and we were anxious to go out. My Uncle and my Dad took us out to the deeper part. When Andrew couldn’t stand anymore he wanted to go back. My Dad took him and Isaac, who wanted to get goggles, and the rest of us stayed behind.  We walked a little further, and then stopped. I grabbed on to my Uncle, because I felt something touch my feet. It was a fish, and I did not like the thought of fish swimming into me. Then I felt something brush my leg. I thought it was Genevieve, because she was on the other side of Uncle Kent.  Then it began to sting really badly. I told my Uncle that something hurt very, very badly. He looked down, and saw a really big jellyfish wrapped around my knee and leg.  He grabbed it and pulled it off of me. It started to wrap around his arm, but he threw it. It got his arm and his side.

Uncle Kent put me down, and we walked to the shore.  It wasn’t stinging as badly under the salty water, but when we got out, it hurt so badly that I started to cry. I told my family that a really big jellyfish had wrapped around my leg. They sat me down, and all immediately got on their phones to look up things that would make it feel better. Vinegar would, but we did not have any. Lemon and lime juice we did have. They squeezed it on, and it bubbled. Then they got a plastic card and tried to scrape off the ‘offending nemeses’ as Google called them. My Aunt Leah mixed backing powder with salt water and poured it on my leg.   A lady nearby us brought Aloe Vera gel over for me. Now only the knee hurt. Lastly, mom gave me Benedryl cream on my leg, and a Benedryl pill to swallow.  Lastly, they wrapped my leg tight with a towel.   After that I did a crossword puzzle with Mimi from the chair I was seated in.  A while later, when it did not hurt so badly, I went with Mimi and Aunt Kristen to Chick-fil-A and Sonic to get lunch. The Benedryl made me extra tired, so I fell half asleep on the way back to our rented beach house. I fell asleep holding my Sonic drink, and Mimi was afraid I would drop it, so she tried to take it from me. I thought I was dropping it, so I jumped up and grabbed it back.  Mimi told me it was only her, and I told her she scared me half to death.

When we got back, I took a shower, careful to keep the soap off of my stung leg.  I went to read on my bed/couch until it was time to go to dinner.  Once out of the shower you could see the marks of the jellyfish’s tentacles.  It hurt badly on and off, like when something touched it, or just randomly.  We went to Lu Lu’s to eat. It is a good restaurant with a gift shop out in front of it.  We ate and then went back to the house.  After the little kids had gone to bed, we played Canasta for a while.
The next day it felt so much better, and again hurt on and off randomly, but not as badly.  The tentacle mars faded away after the second day.On Wednesday the 13, in Gulf Shores Alabama my grandmother Mimi made brownies for breakfast, because it was my brother Andrew’s birthday.
