The Trouble with Solids (TMI Warning!)

The trouble with solids is that it changes your poop.  Bobby seems to be having a real difficulty with this change and is (sorry TMI!) straining so hard that he pukes up his food and/or breastmilk so violently that it comes out his nose too.  It is the weirdest thing.  And very sad to watch.  And even sadder to launder.  We're talking soaking his clothes two to three times a day sometimes.

It started a few weeks ago when we got back from Austria, and I added in breakfast instead of just feeding him dinner.  I have yet to add in lunch because of the current situation of how he is handling this whole thing.  I completely cut out bananas and all other foods known to be constipating.  He has prunes at least every other day for breakfast.  He's taken more baths in the last couple weeks than in his whole life.  (Okay, I admit that is a little bit of an exaggeration.)  Some of the baths are to try to help him poop and some have been to clean him up after the prunes finally clear him out.

He's still nursing well (around 5-6 times in a 24 hour period) and he is gaining weight (about 2 lbs in a month, in fact) so I haven't taken him in to the doctor.  I am trying to find the right balance of prunes and other foods.  I am hoping, like so many things, that this is a developmental phase that will pass once he figures this whole thing out.

Update:  I think the solution for now is to have half a small container of prunes with each meal instead of having a whole container every other meal.  This has allowed him to stop the straining to the point of throwing up his meal and it has allowed very small amounts of variety in his diet so far.
